Dear Johnson Families,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!  We are very excited about the year ahead.  My role is centered around students, safety, and scheduling.  This year I am working closely with the Special Education Department as well.  Below are some highlights on how I support students, staff and families.  Please be sure to read the Parent Student Handbook for more information about Johnson.

We take pride in our continued focus on character education, trauma sensitivity, restorative practices and social emotional learning (SEL).  I work closely with our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Behavior Team to ensure the most effective interventions are implemented with fidelity across all grade levels.  I also work closely with our school psychologist, Dr. Sharon Sirotek as well as our school counselor, Jean Granberg, in our work with the CBITS (Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Trauma in Schools) grant.  Additionally, we take pride in using restorative practices with our students through Classroom Circles, RJ Circles and specific dialogue with students.  Through our Second Step programing we educate students on bullying prevention and SEL. As a building we use the acronym PEAKS to teach positive behaviors:

  • I show PRIDE in myself and my school.
  • I show my best EFFORT every day, in everything I do.
  • I am AWARE of my actions and how they affect myself and others.
  • I can show KINDNESS through my actions and words.
  • I can follow the rules to keep myself and others SAFE.

We follow a very streamlined behavior system within each classroom.  After every attempt has been made to redirect a student who is presenting challenging behavior a student may be referred to the office for discipline and/or referred to the MTSS Behavior Team.  You will be contacted by administration if your child has been referred to the office. Additionally, this school year, we will be implementing Class Dojo school wide.

Johnson Elementary School along with Montrose County Schools continue to improve safety for all students and staff.  We have a safety team that reviews safety throughout the year and works in conjunction with the District to adhere to strict safety standards so all our students have a safe learning environment.  As part of our safety work we are always looking at our drop-off/pick-up loop and playground access.  Last year, with the support of the District, we made the decision that all parents must check-in before entering the playground area with their child.  We ask that all visitors always check-in to receive a badge at the front office—you must bring your ID with you.

Each grade level works as a team regarding their daily schedules.  Those schedules should be communicated to you at the beginning of the year.  Please make every effort to schedule appointments outside of school hours as some of our programming is dependent upon pre-teaching skills and a continuum of learning.  We know that is not always possible; however, please try to limit any interruptions in your child’s learning day and communicate any scheduling changes with your child’s teacher and the front office as soon as possible.  Please honor the start and end of the day as well as all of our teachers practice bell-to-bell learning for the best possible growth and achievement of all students.

I am very excited to be working very closely with the Special Education Department this year.  This includes our Level 1 programming, Level III programming, which we refer to as our Integrated Learning Center or ILC, as well as Speech and Occupational/Physical Therapy services.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me by email or schedule an appointment through our front office.

Those are just a few things I support at Johnson.  I am happy to support students and families in any way I can. Please let me know how I can support your child/ren.
