Dear Johnson Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year!  We are very excited about the year ahead.  I am happy to be back at Johnson Elementary as the Assistant Principal after a semester supporting the transition in administration at Cottonwood Elementary.  Below are some highlights on how I support students, staff and families.  Please be sure to read the Parent Student Handbook for more information about Johnson.

We take pride in our continued focus on character education, cultural responsiveness, trauma sensitivity, restorative practices and social emotional learning (SEL).  I work closely with our Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Behavior Team to ensure the most effective interventions are implemented with fidelity across all grade levels.  I also work closely with our school psychologist, Jacob Price, as well as our Student Engagement Advocate, Marcie Jaramillo.  Mr. Price is new to our school this year and Mrs. Jaramillo is supporting Johnson in a new role this year.  Additionally, we take pride in using restorative practices with our students through Classroom Circles, RJ Circles and specific dialogue with students. Through our Second Step programing we educate students on bullying prevention and SEL.  As a building we use the acronym PEAKS to teach positive behaviors:

  • I show PRIDE in myself and my school.
  • I show my best EFFORT every day, in everything I do.
  • I am AWARE of my actions and how they affect myself and others.
  • I can show KINDNESS through my actions and words.
  • I can follow the rules to keep myself and others SAFE.

We follow a very streamlined behavior system within each classroom.  After every attempt has been made to redirect a student who is presenting challenging behavior a student may be referred to the office for discipline and/or referred to the MTSS Behavior Team.

Johnson Elementary School along with Montrose County Schools continue to improve safety for all students and staff.  We have a safety team that reviews safety throughout the year and works in conjunction with the District to adhere to strict safety standards, so all of our students have access to a safe learning environment.  As part of our safety work we are always looking at our drop-off/pick-up loop and playground access  All visitors must always check-in to receive a visitor’s badge at the front office—you must bring your ID with you.  This includes access to the playground area.

Each grade level works as a team regarding their daily schedules.  Those schedules should be communicated to you at the beginning of the year.  Please make every effort to schedule appointments outside of school hours as some of our programming is dependent upon pre-teaching skills and a continuum of learning.  We know that is not always possible; however, please try to limit any interruptions in your child’s learning day and communicate any scheduling changes with your child’s teacher and the front office as soon as possible.  Please honor the start and end of the day as well as all of our teachers practice bell-to-bell learning for the best possible growth and achievement of all students.

I work closely with a team of highly qualified educators to support the needs of students who are struggling to maintain school appropriate behavior which interfere with teaching and learning.  The first line of communication should always be with your child’s teacher.  I am also available at any time if you have specific questions.

Those are just a few things I support at Johnson.  I am happy to support students and families in any way I can. Please let me know how I can support your child.
